The University of Iowa

The Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research is located at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa (not Idaho ...). Iowa City is a community of 60,000 mostly quite friendly people located in eastern Iowa, about 110 miles east of Des Moines, and a short distance from the mighty Mississippi River, about 60 miles further along Interstate I-80.

The University of Iowa is a major national research university with a solid liberal arts foundation. It was founded in 1847 as Iowa's first institution of higher education. Approximately 28,000 students (19,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate and professional students) are currently enrolled at Iowa during Fall and Spring semesters.

Overlooking the Iowa River is Old Capitol, the central landmark of the University. Built in Greek revival style during the early 1840s, Old Capitol served as the last capitol building for the Iowa's territorial government from 1842 until 1846, and then housed the legislature and government offices for the state until 1857, when state government moved to Des Moines. The building was then used to house various university offices and departments until it was restored as a National Historic Landmark and opened to the public in 1976.

In contrast with this historic structure is one of the University of Iowa's newer campus buildings, the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratory, where CGRER has its offices.
