Description:

In 1991, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forestry Service, Southern Forest Experiment Station, Forestry Inventory and Analysis (SO-FIA) research unit began a project to map forest land distributions for the United States. The project was performed in support of the Forest Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act (RPA) 1993 Assessment Update program to provide information on current forest and rangeland conditions. The RPA mapping project was completed in December 1992.

Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data from NOAA satellites were used as the primary source of information for this project. During the mapping project, all Forest Service FIA research units assisted with reference data and provided technical comments and reviews.

This CD-ROM contains data files and associated descriptive text files for forest type group maps of the lower 48 states, Alaska and Hawaii, and a forest density map of the lower 48 states. The data are essentially large raster (grid) files in a Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection with a spatial resolution of about 1 kilometer.
