Description:

The State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) data base in a digital general soil association map developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. It is a broad based inventory of soils and nonsoil areas that occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically show at the scale mapped. The soil maps for STATSGO were compiled by generalizing more detailed soil survey maps. The approximate mininum area delineated is 625 hectares (1,544 acres). STATSGO was designed primarily for regional, multicounty, river basin, STATE, and multistate resource planning management, and monitoring. STATSGO data are not detailed enough to make interpretations at a county level.

Data for all States except Alaska (and including Puerto Rico) are included on this CD-ROM.

All of the data is in ARC/INFO GIS version 7.0 coverage format. for UNIX. (It is available in other formats such as DLG or in the GRASS GIS on other CD-ROMS.)
