Description:

The Digital Soil Map of the World (DSMW) is based on the 1:5,000,000-scale FAO/UNESCO Soil Map of the World. This original set of paper maps were published between 1994 and 1978. It consists of ten "map sheets": Africa, North America, South America, Central America, Europe, Central and Northeast Asia, Far East, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The present data set includes some corrections and updates to these original maps.

The maps are available in three different formats: one vector format (ARC/INFO Export) and two raster formats (ERDAS and IDRISI). All of the map data are in geographic projection (decimal degrees) with a spherical datum. The scale of the vector data is 1:5,000,000 and the cell size of the raster data is 5x5 arc-minutes.

The Derived Soil Properties dataset consists of soil property data files and QuickBASIC programs used to manipulate them. Other PC-based programs are available for data analysis and creating GIS import files.
