Description:

A digital raster graphic (DRG) is a digital image scanned from a U.S. Geological Survey paper topographic map. The USGS has been investigating DRGs as a potential product since late 1993 and is now proceeding with production. DRG production will be demand-driven, those 7.5' topographic maps in demand will be completed first (the 1:100,000- and 1:250,000-scale map series will also eventually be available in DRG format).

The USGS has produced a couple of CD-ROMs containing sample DRGs. One emphasizes the technical aspects of DRGs with a variety of DRGs of different scale topographic maps. Another CD-ROM contains DRGs of all 50 State Capitals. This particular CD-ROM also includes DOS software (ArcView version 1.0 and AerialView) for displaying this data on a PC.

All DRGs are in TIFF (compressed) image format. Text files on these CD-ROMS are all in ASCII format.
