Data for Decision
[22 minutes, CFB/Tomlinson Associates]

This video, a film produced in 1967 by the Canadian Film Board of Canada, documents the Canada Geographic Information System (CGIS) which was the first GIS ever created to store, manage, analyze, and display geographic data on a continental basis. It was originally created to present the CGIS, then under the direction of Dr. Roger Tomlinson, to government officials who were funding the project. The CGIS was implemented to meet the needs of the Canada Land Inventory for geographical analysis of Canadian farmland.

The GRASS Story
[14 minutes, USACERL]

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory produced this video to explain basic concepts and potential applications of geographic information systems to land managers at Army installations. Although the GRASS GIS is mentioned, the overall presentation of GIS topics is fairly generic. This video presents a reasonably good introduction to GIS.

GIS: An Executive Briefing
[22 minutes, U.S. Dept. of the Interior]

According to the National Science Foundation, GIS are computerized data base management systems that capture, store, retrieve, analyze, and display geographic, cultural, and Earth-science information defined by its location. The Department of the Interior, responsible for most of the nation's publically-owned lands and natural resources, examines general applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies within its Bureaus and offices. This video highlights GIS applications from the following Interior Department agencies: The National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Geological Survey, Office of Surface Mining, Bureau of Mines, and Bureau of Reclamation.
