ArcView
[8 minutes, ESRI]

This video describes ESRI's ArcView software, a stand-alone interface to ARC/INFO databases that runs on PCs, Macintoshes, and Unix workstations. The ease-of-use for the occasional or casual user is highlighed. What is not clearly explained in this video is that ArcView can only be used to display data, it can not perform any data analysis nor can it modify or update the original databases.

GIS Application Specials
[tape 1: 47 minutes; tape 2: 40 minutes, ESRI]

These two videotapes from ESRI show a variety of GIS applications in use. The first videotape includes "GIS in South Carolina", a documentary on the cooperative nature of GIS in that state, and "San Diego's Regional Urban Information System" which looks at the San Diego County's and City's joint effort to establish a GIS. The second video tape includes "Qatar" which shows how GIS is being used in that country; "Explore Your World" which profiles the use of GIS in an elementary school in suburban Utah and an inner city technical high school in Detroit; and "GIS for AM/FM" which describes how Houston Lighting and Power has implemented GIS technology.

Geographic Information Systems
[25 minutes, Boise Interagency Fire Center/NPS]

The applications and benefits of using a GIS for National Park planning and management are discussed in this video using a combination of case studies and interviews. Basic GIS concepts and functions are also explained. Although the video starts off with a rather awkward skit, it does settle into a useful discussion of GIS applications in natural resource applications.
