The outflow from Coralville Dam over its spillway eroded a 15' deep channel into the underlying Devonian-age bedrock deposits. This area below the dam is now called "Devonian Gorge" and provides a rare opportunity for the public to observe geologic features such as fossils, normally hidden from view.
