Flood Images - Local

The Coralville Dam, just north of Iowa City on the Iowa River, overflowed its spillway (seen on the center left in this image) for the first time since it was completed in 1958. Flooding occurred both downstream from the dam due to the enormous outflow and behind the dam as the flood control pool (Coralville Lake) greatly expanded. The outflow reached a peak of over 24,000 cubic feet per second versus the previous record of 13,000 cfs. (During drought conditions the outflow is regulated to be 150 cfs to provide a sufficient flow to meet downstream water needs.)
