CGRER: Computer Laboratory
Suggested Computer-Related Courses
Use of the UNIX workstations and sophisticated application software
in the CGRER computer laboratory requires some prior computer
experience.
Ideally, this would include a good familiarity with basic computer
concepts, some experience using the UNIX operating system,
knowledge of a computer programming language, and an understanding
of numerical methods.
Even with this background, users can expect to spend additional
time and effort learning how to use the CGRER workstations and
software.
Although it is conceivable that someone could learn these basic
skills on their own, realistically students should be encouraged
to take as many computer-related courses as possible and to
continually apply these skills in their other coursework.
Below are listed many of the available and relevant computer-related
courses offered in several departments at the University of Iowa
that non-majors in other disciplines may be able to take (e.g.
engineering courses are therefore not indicated here).
Check with the department and/or instructor to find out when a
particular course is offered.
